The Hotel 71: A Mix of History and Modernity

History of the Hotel 71

1856 – Work begins on the building to house Canada’s 1st French-speaking bank: the National Bank of Canada.

A prestigious neo-classical building built of dressed stone according to the plans of renowned architect J.F. Peachy, this prestigious building was continuously occupied by the National Bank for more than a century.

1921 – Quebec City is in full economic boom. Several banks set up shop on St-Pierre Street, which was then at the heart of the capital’s economic growth. St-Pierre Street is even nicknamed the Wall Street of Quebec City!5 floors will be added to the original building, giving it its final appearance that is still in place to this day.

2000 – The Gilbert family acquires the building located at 71 Saint-Pierre Street, marking the beginning of a new era for this historic building.

2005 – Opening of Hotel 71, transforming the former bank building into an elegant boutique hotel in the heart of the Old Port of Quebec. The establishment opens with 40 rooms with a timeless and refined décor, combining elements of historic architecture and modern amenities.

2010 – Opening of the Il Matto restaurant. Quickly becoming a staple in the sector, the renowned Il Matto restaurant offers lovers of Italian cuisine a tasty experience and is a perfect complement to the Hotel 71’s service offering.

2011 – 20 new rooms are added to the hotel to meet growing customer demand, totaling 60 rooms as well as 4 meeting rooms.
